Raddis Cotton
A pioneering regenerative organic cotton initiative, enhancing the Indigenous women farmers' livelihoods while regenerating the environment.
Raddis® Cotton System is a trailblazing initiative in the realm of the global regenerative organic cotton movement. This ground-breaking program spearheads a dual mission: uplifting vulnerable Indigenous women farmers and rejuvenating the environment through the fusion of “Nature-Based Solutions” and agroecology.
Raddis® Cotton endeavours to build a greener and more equitable world. Each acre of Raddis® farm has the remarkable ability to sequester approximately 2-3 tonnes of carbon annually, contributing to our battle against climate change. Key attributes of the Raddis farm include enhanced biodiversity and optimized soil water retention, making it a beacon of environmental stewardship and resilience.
Raddis® is an acronym representing “Radically Disruptive”.
Farm Activities
Food & Fibre Gardens: Raddis® promotes the establishment of food and fibre gardens, fostering biodiversity by cultivating a diverse range of crops in harmony.
Low Tillage: Raddis® embraces low or no-till farming to gently protect the soil, preserving its structure, organic richness, and fertility by avoiding excessive ploughing. This approach prevents erosion and nurtures healthier, more resilient soils for lasting productivity.
No GMOs: By prioritizing natural and traditional crop varieties, Raddis® farmers avoid genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to support biodiversity and strengthen crops' resilience to environmental challenges.
No Chemicals: Raddis® farmers eliminate toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers by adopting biological plant protection techniques and locally produced organic manures; which safeguard the well-being of our farmers, consumers, and the environment, ensuring healthier ecosystems.
Impact
Social
Through the formation of Producer Organisations (POs), Raddis® women farmers aggregate supply and demand. The additional benefits are value addition, collective storage, certification, improved negotiation power and invaluable peer learning opportunities.
Ecological
RADDIS® champions ecological sustainability by eliminating toxic chemicals, synthetic fertilizers, and GMOs. RADDIS® can sequester 2 to 3 tons of carbon per acre annually, mitigating climate change. This holistic approach enhances biodiversity, enriches soil health, and increases water retention, promoting overall environmental sustainability.
Economic
Through the adoption of regenerative practices, farmers have witnessed a remarkable 35% increase in their annual household incomes. This enhancement stems from reduced costs, the elimination of middlemen, and effective value-added marketing strategies, empowering farmers to attain greater financial stability and cultivate a more prosperous future.
Span
Raddis®Cotton is partnering with 10,000 indigenous farmers, 90% of whom are women, across 700 villages in the Eastern Ghats of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. This initiative spans 11,000 acres in 2024, empowering local communities and promoting sustainable practices.
